We pull up to the doctor’s office after thirty minutes of awkward silence, interrupted only by awkward conversation.

I start to get out.

“Wait. Just sit still.” Maddox jumps out, walks around the Jeep, opens my door, and holds out his hand for me.

“Thank you.” I take his hand and step out.

He puts his arm around me and places his hand on my back as we walk into the entry of the doctor’s office. After checking in, we sit and wait to be called. He holds my hand and taps his foot nervously the entire time.

Once called in, I am instructed to go to the bathroom to leave a urine sample, and when I come out, Maddox is thanking a friendly nurse, who gave him a pad of paper and a pen. I watch him smile then look toward me, and his face tenses again.

I roll my eyes as I walk past him and follow the nurse into the exam room.

Maddox sits and writes on that notepad until the doctor walks in. He stands and shakes his hand.

“Nice to see you both again.” Dr. James says as he sits in his chair and rolls it up next to Maddox and I. “So, you think you may be pregnant again?”

Maddox answers, “We do. I would like to ask a few questions, if you don’t mind.”

“Go ahead, Maddox. Ask away.”

Maddox seems to be concerned with the fact that I was, in fact, on the pill for a month previously, and that, even though I missed pills, I am pregnant. Apparently, he found something online that said it was possible, but he still wanted an explanation.

“Your body thinks it’s pregnant while you’re on the pill. That’s why it is such a highly effective form of birth control. When you stop, and then menstruation occurs, your body knows it, in fact …”

I sit back and cross my arms as they go back and forth. I’m not even listening anymore. The questions he’s asking, I learned about in seventh grade health class. Maddox, however, never had that chance.

“Harper?”

I look over at them after he apparently repeats my name.

“See? This is what’s been happening. She seems so … off.”

The doctor laughs and pats his knee. “That happens during pregnancy.”

I was off? I was off! Oh man, he is in for it.

A knock at the door interrupts their conversation, and a nurse walks in and hands Dr. James a chart.

Dr. James opens it and smiles. “Congratulations.”

Maddox lets out a deep breath, and then … continues asking questions and writing things down. They don’t stop chatting, even when the nurse is drawing blood. Maddox does stand next to me and holds my hand while the blood is drawn, but as soon as the nurse leaves, he continues asking those questions and writing every answer down. So cute, so intense, so … Maddox.

Before leaving, we schedule an appointment for an internal exam in two weeks.

I do not ask one single question at the appointment. Not one.
